Greetings Fellow New Haven Rotarians,

Welcome to the first edition of "From the office of the President-elect," an informal bulletin I will be sending out periodically (until July 1 when my term begins) to talk about both current and future matters relevant to the Club.

Like most of my fellow presidents-elect who attended the recent Presidents-Elect Training Seminar (PETS) in New Hampshire, I came back with a number of ideas and thoughts on things our Club might want to do (as well as things we need to do – such as grow our membership) both in the next few months and in the year ahead. As a firm believer in the principle that it is not what I want to do that matters, but what we as a Club want to do, I welcome your thoughts and suggestions on our priorities and focus for 2009-2010. Send your comments to amay47@sbcglobal.net or mention them to me at Club meetings.

Upcoming events

Focusing on the future – Six priority areas for 2009-2010.

Club administration / financial management -- Priorities here include creation of an annual budget; monthly tracking and reporting of revenues vs. expenses and a balance sheet and establishment of a committee to review the Club bylaws, which were last reviewed in 2002. I am also looking for a member to step forward to be our publicity chair during the next year

Membership growth – As recently as five years ago, the Club had 62 numbers. By July, I expect active / dues paying member to be around 40. I would like to reverse that trend and end up my year with an overall net gain of 2-4 persons. I also intend to investigate the creation of a second Club in New Haven, perhaps in the Fairhaven area, which would not negatively impact potential membership growth in our Club.

Strategic planning – As the Cheshire Cat once told Alice in Alice in Wonderland, "If you aren’t sure where you are going, any road will get to there." During my tenure as president, I would like to see the Club determine in what direction it wants to go over the next 3-5 years and take the first steps to develop a strategic plan to get there. Part of this will involve having our Club take part in the Rotary International "Club Visioning" program, which is designed to help a Club determine its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and help it decide where it wants to be in terms of membership and programs five years down the road.

The Rotary Foundation -- I agree with those who say it is important that we support our own Charitable Trust. I also agree that we need to reverse the trend of the past couple of years, which has seen more dollars going out of the Trust than coming in. At the same time, however, I think we must renew our commitment to support the international Rotary Foundation, both through our support of fundraisers for PolioPlus and by having a majority of Club members make a personal donation to the Foundation during the year. The amount of each member’s donation is up to him or her, but my goal is to have as close to 100 percent participation as possible. I also want the Club to apply for a grant, either to support a local project or an international one, and increase efforts to educate Club members on what the Rotary Foundation is all about.

International, community, club and vocational service-- One of the strengths of Rotary and one of the things that distinguishes it from other service organizations is the international scope of its work. During the next year, I would like to see the Club re-involve itself in international service, by either creating a partnership with a Club in another country, by supporting efforts already begun by another club, such as the water filter project run by Hamden Rotarians or by greater involvement in a group like Chris George’s Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services (IRIS) organization. I also want to conduct a review of all the community and vocational services projects we are involved in, such as Amber Alert, the Dictionary Project, Rotary Readers, Student-Of-The-Month, Youth Olympics and Salvation Army bell ringers, and consider what we can do to support Governor Colin’s focus on the environment and tree-planting during the next year.

Multi-club collaboration – I was impressed with many of the presidents-elect I met at PETS last weekend and particularly with those who will be heading Clubs in greater New Haven. Accordingly, I would like to see us explore ways to involve suburban clubs more in some of our activities, such as "Make A Difference Day" which again will be occurring in October, and possibly even in joint fundraisers. I also would like to strengthen our ties / involvement with both the Rotaract Club at Yale and the Interact Club at High School in the Community.

An ambitious agenda? Probably so. You will be hearing more details about each of these goals as we move forward. I will consider my year a success if we make progress in achieving half of them, especially those related to club administration, finance and membership growth.

As I said in the beginning of this message, I welcome your thoughts and ideas of what we should be doing in the next year and am more than willing to revise the goals set out here to accommodate others the Club overall thinks are important. That’s because, in the final analysis, the future of the Club is up to you, the Club member. Like the future of Rotary itself, the success or failure of our Club is, as incoming Rotary International John Kenny has put it "in your hands.
