Club Announcements

Dear Fellow Rotarians,
I am asking those of you who have been so helpful and enthusiastic about the Rotary Dictionary Project and fundraiser to join in this years event.  The St Patrick's Day Parade is Sunday March 9th. Go to www.stpatricksdayparade.org for details.  I would like to partner with LAZ parking for the fundraiser and this year's goal is to fill two parking lots.  Last year we filled the George Street garage but the York Street Garage was not. The problem is not us but the routing of the traffic and the police blocking of access to York Street before the parade begins.
I will contact LAZ and start the process.
I was hoping that Dennis Daniels could work with the police so we can get the traffic into the garage.
I was also hoping that Sharon, Betty Jane, Mary Beth (Jimmy) and Bob would brainstorm and choose the items we want to sell at the parade.  We also need a volunteer to get the New Haven Vendor's permit ( this needs to be done as soon as possible).
I still have some of the signs and posters so I will be responsible for getting enough made if we need more. I will also make up the flyers to hand out and advertise our event.
If Al May is able to get us the press and the radio time again, that would be great.  Then we need our team to encourage the cars to park at LAZ and our teams to sell our items at the parade.

Dictionary Team
We will begin distributing the dictionaries at the end of March 2008
I will contact Catherine Sullivan DeCarlo and Dr. Mayo and send the appropriate letters out to the schools.
I will also order the dictionaries from the Dictionary Project
Tony Marks volunteered to keep the list of schools and set up the roster for distribution of the dictionaries. We will ask for Rotarians to volunteer to distribute the dictionaries.
Art Randolph hopefully can secure the warehouse for us to use again this year.
Carl will hopefully modify the bookplate so we can put them in the books.
Anita will hopefully organize a book reading and distribution at a school with the New Haven Register present

I know that I have not thought of everything but this is a start. Let me know if you can join in this effort and ask a fellow Rotarian who has not done this before to join this effort.
Let me know who is on board. We will have to meet, although much of this is rountine for some of us.

We're off and running.
Many thanks,
Diane

A letter from our District Ambassadorial Scholar Alison Schary....

Dear Rotary District 7980,

Cheers from Dublin! My sincere apologies for the delay between the last
email and this one -- I have a lot to tell you about over the past two
months!

Daylight savings time has brought long beautiful days to Ireland, with
early sunrises and twilight not falling until around 9 pm. All the trees
and flowers are in bloom, the air is warm -- it's wonderful to walk
around Dublin and stroll through the parks and squares. I have been
working hard at my studies and am approaching my last week of classes at
this point, before I begin to work exclusively on my term papers and
dissertation. Right now I am in the midst of writing a paper on Samuel
Beckett, particularly focusing on the influence of J.M. Synge's
tragicomedy in Beckett's dramas.

In Rotary news, I have been speaking at several clubs over the past few
months. On April 4 I spoke at my first Northern Irish club, the Rotary
Club of Belfast -- one of the oldest Rotary clubs in Europe. As with all
of my presentations, it was a wonderful experience, and I spoke with
many interesting Rotarians at the meeting. My visit to the Belfast club
came about because I was already up in Northern Ireland that weekend
with the Photography Society from Trinity. We spent the weekend in
Ballycastle, a small town on the coast of County Antrim, where we
explored the beautiful surrounding area. During the weekend we went to
the Giant's Causeway, a breathtaking stretch of coastline which is
marked by spectacular rock formations, most notably a "causeway" out
into the sea of perfectly hexagonal basalt pillars, all naturally
formed. We also spent time at Carrick-a-rede, an island reached only be
crossing a rope bridge over a ravine; the ruins of Dunluce Castle
overlooking the sea; and on Rathlin Island, which is the only inhabited
island in Northern Ireland. The weekend was a lot of fun and very
memorable, and I have many wonderful pictures as a result! On the way
back to Dublin we stopped in Belfast to tour the city and see the murals
in the various neighborhoods, and at that point I left the rest of the
group to stay on in Belfast for a night, where I had dinner with fellow
Rotary Scholar Alex Chung (of Louisiana, studying at Queen's University
Belfast) and then spoke at the Rotary Club of Belfast the next day
before heading back to Dublin. I have several other presentations
planned over the next few weeks and am looking forward to speaking at
clubs in the south and west of Ireland when I travel there with my
family in May.

I hope you are all doing well, and I am already looking forward to
sharing my experiences with you when I return to the States this summer.
As always, thank you so much for your generosity in sponsoring me this
year, and please let next year's scholars know that they have an amazing
and memorable year ahead of them!

More updates to come soon!

All the best,
Alison Schary
