A letter from our District Ambassadorial Scholar Alison Schary....
Dear Rotary District 7980,
Cheers from Dublin! My sincere apologies for the delay between the last
email and this one -- I have a lot to tell you about over the past two
months!
Daylight savings time has brought long beautiful days to Ireland, with
early sunrises and twilight not falling until around 9 pm. All the trees
and flowers are in bloom, the air is warm -- it's wonderful to walk
around Dublin and stroll through the parks and squares. I have been
working hard at my studies and am approaching my last week of classes at
this point, before I begin to work exclusively on my term papers and
dissertation. Right now I am in the midst of writing a paper on Samuel
Beckett, particularly focusing on the influence of J.M. Synge's
tragicomedy in Beckett's dramas.
In Rotary news, I have been speaking at several clubs over the past few
months. On April 4 I spoke at my first Northern Irish club, the Rotary
Club of Belfast -- one of the oldest Rotary clubs in Europe. As with all
of my presentations, it was a wonderful experience, and I spoke with
many interesting Rotarians at the meeting. My visit to the Belfast club
came about because I was already up in Northern Ireland that weekend
with the Photography Society from Trinity. We spent the weekend in
Ballycastle, a small town on the coast of County Antrim, where we
explored the beautiful surrounding area. During the weekend we went to
the Giant's Causeway, a breathtaking stretch of coastline which is
marked by spectacular rock formations, most notably a "causeway" out
into the sea of perfectly hexagonal basalt pillars, all naturally
formed. We also spent time at Carrick-a-rede, an island reached only be
crossing a rope bridge over a ravine; the ruins of Dunluce Castle
overlooking the sea; and on Rathlin Island, which is the only inhabited
island in Northern Ireland. The weekend was a lot of fun and very
memorable, and I have many wonderful pictures as a result! On the way
back to Dublin we stopped in Belfast to tour the city and see the murals
in the various neighborhoods, and at that point I left the rest of the
group to stay on in Belfast for a night, where I had dinner with fellow
Rotary Scholar Alex Chung (of Louisiana, studying at Queen's University
Belfast) and then spoke at the Rotary Club of Belfast the next day
before heading back to Dublin. I have several other presentations
planned over the next few weeks and am looking forward to speaking at
clubs in the south and west of Ireland when I travel there with my
family in May.
I hope you are all doing well, and I am already looking forward to
sharing my experiences with you when I return to the States this summer.
As always, thank you so much for your generosity in sponsoring me this
year, and please let next year's scholars know that they have an amazing
and memorable year ahead of them!
More updates to come soon!
All the best,
Alison Schary
